PARK AVENUE, LAKE STREET TO 38th STREET, CENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD, MINNEAPOLIS, MN
Originally designed to be a stylish boulevard of urban estates offering a wide street, generous setbacks, and spacious lots, Park Avenue was once ranked as one of the finest residential streets in Minneapolis. While far too many of its largest mansions north of Lake Street--those built for the city's business and professional elite during the late 1800s and early 1900s--are long gone (replaced by modern commercial structures) the majority of its more "modest" wood frame homes south of Lake Street still remain. These lovely residences, built largely for the families of upper-middle class professionals at the turn of the last century, evoke images of horse-drawn carriages and velvet-lined sleighs. They are the elaborate Queen Annes, stately Colonial Revivals, and elegant Four-Squares of South Minneapolis. Grand homes designed by such leading architects of the day as Lowell A. Lamoreaux, Bertrand & Chamberlin, Boehme & Cordella, James H. Record, Septimus J. Bowler, Dorr & Dorr, Lindstom & Almars, Louis Boynton Bersback, Glenn L. Saxton, and Theron P. Healy, just to name a few. And built by such masters of their craft as John Enquist, Horace Newell Leighton, William O. Clark, and Barclay Cooper.
Today, the stories of the people who built, lived in, and loved these fine homes lives on through the many active historical preservation and restoration efforts of Park Avenue's current residents.
