Willmar Kandiyohi County

Originally built as the Hospital Farm for Inebriates in 1907, it admitted patients who voluntarily sought treatment for addiction to alcohol or drugs. Upon completion it could house fifty patients and expanded to one hundred by 1914. In 1917, the hospital expanded its program to include treatment of the mentally ill and became known as the Asylum for the Insane at Willmar. After two years, the name was changed once again to Willmar State Asylum. The hospital provided care for transferred patients from other state institutions until 1951, when it because a receiving hospital serving southwestern Minnesota. In 1985 the name was changed to Willmar Regional Treatment Center (Executive Order No. 85-17). For most of its existence, the hospital has provided care and treatment primarily for the insane; however, alcoholic and drug treatment has always been part of its program. The hospital also administers general psychiatric care and treatment through area mental health and mental retardation programs in Luverne, Marshall, St. Cloud, and Willmar.

The dozen or so buildings use Renaissance and Spanish Colonial detailing on the white stuccoed and hipped roof buildings.
