Known in the Dakota language as "Oiyuwege" or place of crossing, this ford on the Minnesota River was an important meeting place for Eastern Dakota bands. During the period of the Fur Trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, the site was known by the French name "Traverse des Sioux" or "Crossing of the Sioux." In 1851 an important treaty between the U.S. Government and the Sisseton and Wahpeton Dakota was negotiated and signed here. The treaty opened what is now most of southern Minnesota to Euro-American settelers. For a short time, until circa 1869 a town existed at Traverse but by the late 1800's it was gone, replaced by the nearby towns of St. Peter and Mankato. Today the Nicollet County Historical Society [1]manages the area as an historic site.
