"Odd fellows" do odd jobs, that is, they are day laborers. This fraternal organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, had many working class members in the 19th century. Many workers belonged to fraternal organizations for social reasons and because the organizations offered insurance policies that provided some protection against injury, ill health and old age before Social Security and other benefits were won in the 1930s. Some fraternal organizations were ethnically based.
