The house was built in 1898 for an estimated cost of $14,000 by Crawford Livingston who was an officer with the St. Paul Gas Light Co. Charles Smith, who bought the house two years later, was an investment broker. His family continued to live in the house until at least 1932. The house is one of the last houses Cass Gilbert designed in St. Paul.
