Historic Function: Rail yards/rail-related

The shops were originally built by James J. Hill's St. Paul and Manitoba Railroad. In 1893 it became the Great Northern. Two buildings remain from the original complex, built of grey Platteville limestone. Workers here participated in the 1894 and 1922 railroad strikes.

At the Great Northern shop facility, one may find anything from a rare Westinghouse diesel electric locomotive, passenger cars and a steam engine or three undergoing restoration.
