History

Harland Parish, a clerk for NP Shops, built 1023 Avon Street in 1912. At the time, the street was named Crowell, and remained so until the 1940s. The Parish family lived at Crowell until 1923, when they moved. The home was briefly occupied by Richard Sutton, a cashier for Griggs Cooper & Co. In the late 30s, the house was purchased by the Connolly family.

John and Emma Connolly had three surviving children, Marcella, Lawrence and Mary. After John and Emma’s passing of heart complications (John in 1958, and Emma in 1971), the house was passed on to Marcella and Mary, who lived there until their old age. Neighbors remember the sisters chatting often in the screened-in porch. They also recall that Mary would walk around Como Lake every day. When it was necessary for Marcella to enter an assisted living home, Mary decided to sell the house. In December of 2006, it was purchased by Nick and Lindsey Dyer.

The Dyers discovered “JC ‘43” written in red paint inside the garage. They figured it to be the initial of John Connolly, who would have built the garage in 1943. There is also “MC” initialed in the concrete in the back yard, which could refer to either Marcella or Mary Connolly.
