Date of site visit 2/1/1982 by Fieldworker: R. Younger

Significant details: "Cast concrete framework supporting large window groupings. Entrance areas at northwest and southeast corners are recessed beneath second story. Curved glass entrances. South facing wall has many skylights which light the main interior space. Interior is arranged around a three story atrium or court with a second level library, classrooms, student lounge and a two story moot courtroom with gallery for observers. The building contains several innovative energy efficient features."

Significant site and landscape features: "Located on the east side of Hamline University campus facing a courtyard of brick and pine trees with railroad tie terracing."

Historical background: "Hamline school of Law was founded as an independent law school and merged with Hamline University in 1976. It is Minnesota's only private, University affiliated law school. Classes were held in the Drew Dormitory until this building was completed in 1980. Designed by local architects Hammel, Green, and Abrahamson, the law center cost an estimated $5 million to construct. The design was a winner of one of six Honor Awards presented in 1981 by the Minnesota Society of the American Institute of Architects."

Statement of Significance: "The Hamline Law center is an energy efficient award winning building designed by local architects Hammel, Green, and Abrahamson. It houses the state's only private University-affiliated law school."
