This apartment building is superbly detailed in the rowhouse manner, with each Bates Street unit given either a pressed-iron clad bay window or window set in a diapered frame. The broadly arched ground floor openings suggest the Romanesque style.[1]

I lived here In late 1940s 5-11 years old. 234 bates right entry, top floor, Rear.there were two large roofed porches before the fire In the 80s. lots of Kids In the bldg saw their dads come home from the war In 46. evenings on the Back porches, lots of laughter, hamm's beer, and sentimental journey echoeing from radios through the Backyards.

Harry Bluer was the bldg. sup. and Mrs. Garing (3rd floor, far rt, front) Faithfully scrubbed the stairwells on her knees with bucket and brush every Month. I know she made It to heaven for that task alone.

The building was originaly built for young bachelor execs from the st. paul Financial district. one bathroom for every two apartments. Great steam heat System.

I can remember (at 234) Lundgren family, 3 kids, Olsons, one boy, Mrs. Garing, john Pavick, (later married my mother) mrs. trost and grown son, mr. and mrs. wyeberg And their son Richard, Wilson family, and daughter Jeannie (I thought the world Of her) the Pilot family, 3 kids, Nick and Annabel Anderson and their three kids, Richard, Lorrain, and Beautiful little Lynnie. Richard was a wonderful boy that All the neighborhood kids looked up to. Alas, the river took him. see you later Dickie.

Hasley food store In the Shorenstein Bldg. across the street. Nevilles Market across from them. A gentleman missing legs at the hips pushed himself on a Caster board down and up the Wilson Hill every day to the streetcar.
