History

"The 1886-87 city directory lists the firm of McClung, McMurran and Company (John McClung, and J. Royall McMurran) as real estate loans and financial agents located at 109 E. 4th Street in downtown St. Paul. By 1888-89, John Royall McMurran is listed in the city directory as residing in St. Anthony Park (specific address not listed), and employed in the firm of J.R. McMurran, S. McMurran, and McCurdy; with offices at 66 Globe Building in downtown St. Paul. Though it is not known whether J. Royall McMurran lived in this house, we do know that he platted part of the northern section of St. Anthony Park while serving as an agent for a group of Richmond Virginia capitalists. It could be that this house was built by McClung and McMurran as an investment. The house has been owned by the Cleland family for many years (perhaps since it was built)."
