County’s first frame residence, a Greek Revival dwelling built in 1853 by fur trader Faribault; also served as a civic center, polling place, and church.
History
One of the earliest frame houses built in the state, this Greek Revival dwelling, with its formal plan and symmetrical massing, suggests the dignified manner in which Alexander Faribault conducted both his business and his personal life. Born to a renowned family of explorers and fur traders, Faribault gave freely to the churches in the town he founded and forged harmonious relationships with the American Indians of Rice County. Faribault’s two-story house – which also served as a conference center, polling place and church – was partially rebuilt in 1945 by the Rice County Historical Society to serve as a monument to his generous spirit.[1]
