This barn or carriage house once stood behind a house built in 1893 for the original owner and resident John Peterson, a car repairer for the Minnesota Transfer Railway Company, whose large yards were located west of this house a few blocks. The house was built for an estimated $500 and Peterson owned it at least through 1941. This barn was probably built at the same time the house was constructed, or soon afterward. It is not known when the house was demolished. A large barn or carriage house which has survived the residence which it once serviced. Large two story out buildings like this are becoming a rarity in St. Paul.
