History

Once a part of Vetal Guerin's farm, this site was the location for the St. Paul City Market built in 1853. This structure later housed the St. Paul Public Library, which was destroyed by fire on April 27, 1915. Before the year was out plans were made for the current structure, erected for George Benz and Sons (who built the Schubert Building). Fred C. Norlander was awarded the building contract in early December. The completed structure was opened in the last week of 1916 and housed the St. Francis Hotel and the New Palace Theater along with several shops. Later occupants of the building were the Orpheum Theater and the Capri Hotel. The original hotel contained 215 rooms. The theater and several storefronts were vacated in 1917. The structure was revived in June, 1981, with the reopening of the Orpheum theater. The upper floors are now Seventh Place Apartments.

Notes

In the 1920s, the New Palace was renamed the 'Orpheum Theatre'. First run films ended in the 1970s. It was open for special showings for a few years, but closed permanently in 1984.
