Historical Background: This home in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood was built in 1886 for John C. Stevens, "who was employed as a teacher who boarded at Hamline University in 1886-87." The John C. Stevens house was built for "$1,950," and Stevens "by 1887-88 is listed as a resident of a house 'two east of Snelling Avenue' which is presumably this house. By 1889-90 he is listed as a resident of this house." The Stevens house is 2 and 1/2 stories with "one interior brick chimney." The house was built with a wood frame and clapboard is used as the"main exterior wall covering." The roof stye is a "intersecting hip and gable" with "rectangular 1/1" fenestration.
Other significant details: "Complex, asymmetrical design, with picturesque roofline, rich surface textures. Simple bargeboards, shingles, diagonal sheathing and stickwork in gable ends. Queen Anne style windows. Porch (which probably dates ca. 1910) is an open wrap around porch with Tuscan columns, pediment over entrance, simple balustrade.
